This year the University of Tennessee Central Florida Alumni Chapter has chosen The Russell Home for Atypical Children
as their community project. Our goal is to raise $1,000.00 to help with medical and living expenses for the children.
The Russell Home for Atypical Children was established on November 13, 1951 by Mrs. Vantrease Russell. The Russell
Home was the first non-profit institution in the country for brain-damaged children and is the only private, non-profit
facility of its kind for severely handicapped children in Central Florida.
The Russell Home provides around the clock specialized care, with love and a home-like atmosphere. There are currently 25
people living in this home with special needs.
Please visit their website at www.russellhome.org for more information.
Mrs. Vantrease “Grandma” Russell has since passed away but her legacy continues on with her daughters and granddaughter.
While talking with her granddaughter Betty, she mentioned that the Down Syndrome children love watching football. She said
they would love to have hats and jerseys. If anyone has any Tennessee hats or T-shirts that you are no longer using, we
would love to give them to the children. Please bring these items to our football viewing parties or contact us
at utvolsmco@earthlink.net so we can make arrangements to pick-up items.
We will be collecting donations at the TV Viewing parties at JB’s Sports Restaurant. Just a $1.00 will help us tremendously
in reaching our goal. If you are unable to attend the TV Viewing parties and would like to donate to The Russell Home please
email us at utvolsmco@earthlink.net.
Thank you for helping us help the children.
