2008 Spring Event "An Evening with Haywood Harris and Gus Manning"

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Two of the most notable sports authorities in UT history, Haywood Harris and Gus Manning, joined us at Tolla's Italian Bistro & Cafe in Winter Park, FL on Wednesday June 4, 2008. Haywood Harris is the Executive Assistant to the Athletic Director at UT and Gus Manning is a Special Assistant to the Athletic Director. These two gentlemen have hosted a local Tennessee sports radio show for more than 20 years. Together they co-authored the bestselling book Six Seasons Remembered. Their latest book is Once a Vol, Always a Vol. Their UT sports knowledge and stories are unsurpassed making this a thoroughly entertaining event!

This intimate event started with a social allowing old and new alumni/family/friends to catch up on the news. Haywood Harris and Gus Manning were accompanied by Debbie Ingram (UTAA President) and Angela Mills (UTAA program director).

The capacity crowd was thoroughly entertained by Haywood's and Gus's humourous stories about UT Football. After their presentation, they signed their books Six Seasons Remembered and Once A Vol, Always A Vol . Proceeds from these books go directly to the University of Tennessee's athletic program. Their latest book Game of My Life: Tennessee Vols: Memorable Stories of Tennessee Football will be released in August. Pre-orders are being taken at this time.

2007 Big Orange Kickoff Picnic

The 2007 Big Orange Kickoff Picnic!

Once again UT fans showed their colors! There is nothing like a UT Fan and your support made this year's picnic another successful event for 2007!

It was great to catch up with old friends and old memories. It was wonderful to see new faces at this years picnic! We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.

As usual, the children had a great time running, playing and swimming!

A special thank you to all who generously donated to this year's alumni "give back to the community" fundraiser for The Russell Home for Atypical Children. Your $256.00 gave us a tremendous kick-off towards our goal of $1000.00! Thank you again.

2007 Spring/Summer Event "A Day and Night at the Museum"

with special guest speaker UT Associate History Professor Dr. Robert Bast

"The Da Vinci Code: Fact or Fiction?"

The Orange County Regional History Center was the location for our 2007 Spring/Summer Event "A Day and Night at the Museum". The History Center is the former Orange County Courthouse (1927-1999). Our event started with a tour of The History Museum which lead directly to our social in Courtroom B.

Our dinner was also held in Courtroom B which has its own history. You can see where Ted Bundy scratched his name in the defendants table he used during his trial in 1980. Ted Bundy was tried in the former Annex to the 1927 Orange County Courthouse. In 1987 this courtroom was the first place in the United States where DNA was used to win a conviction.

Our special guest speaker Dr. Robert Bast drew on his background as a seminary graduate and a specialist in Early Modern European History to explore such questions as "Was Jesus Married? Was Mary Magdalene really his intended successor? Do secret gospels contain "real truth" about early Christianity? Does Da Vinci's 'Last Supper' contain clues to an ancient mystery?" He used facts to prove the fiction. It was an excellent presentation.

Our silent auction included a Bruce Pearl signed basketball, a Pat Summitt signed Lady Vols basketball, Pat Summitt Wheaties box, a pin flag signed by both Phillip Fulmer and Bruce Pearl and cartoonist Jake Vest donated 2 original drawings, .

The evening ended with the drawing of the Tennessee vs. Florida football tickets. Kris Phillips, UTNAA Director of Alumni Programs, was selected to draw the winning ticket. The winner was pick from ballots collected during the 2006 football season TV parties as well as the ballots collected at the 2006 Kickoff Picnic. Mary Ellen Leslie was the winner.
