Haywood Harris (August 26, 1929-June 2, 2010)

Haywood Harris died on Wednesday June 2, 2010 at his home in Knoxville, TN. He was 80 year's old. Haywood Harris, who promoted, wrote about and enjoyed an association with University of Tennessee athletics for nearly 50 years. Mr. Harris, who oversaw the UT Athletic Department’s sports information office and served as an assistant athletic director from 1961 to his retirement in 2000. Mr. Harris continued to work in the athletic department as an assistant athletic director on a part-time basis after his retirement.

He and Gus Manning hosted a sports radio show — “The Locker Room” — from 1961 until 2009. It was considered to be the longest-running radio sports show in the country.

The UT Central Florida Chapter had the pleasure of hosting Haywood Harris and Gus Manning in 2008 for our Spring Event. It was the most entertaining evening the chapter has had. Haywood, you are truely missed.

A wonderful time was had by all. How could we lose when we spent an evening with such great friends. The food was fantastic and so was the presentation. The Univerity of Tennessee's very own Wendel Werner, Director of UT Singers, gave his presentation on how the state of Florida impacted "The History of Rock and Roll" (good and bad).

Lady Vols vs. Florida outing with the Tallahassee Chapter

The Central Florida Alumni Chapter met with the Tallahassee Chapter in Gainseville, Florida to watch the Lady Vols. We met at Beef-O'Brady's before the game for a bite to eat. It was nice to meet and spend time with members from another chapter and the Lady Vols were greatful for the support.

"A Tennessee Thanksgiving Dinner" at Disney's "Old Spice Classic"

This year many UT fans from all over the United States spent Thanksgiving with the University of Tennessee Central Florida Alumni Chapter. The dinner was held after the MBB team played at the Old Spice Classic. Coach Pearl and John Curry stopped by to speak to the group and to have pictures taken.

The 2008 UT Kickoff Party!

Once again UT fans showed their colors! There is nothing like a UT Fan! The party at Buffalo's Southwest Cafe was a great way to kick-off the 2008-2009 Tennessee football season. A Big Orange Thank you goes out to Antone and Carrie Davis, for allowing us to take over his restaurant.

This year we had a record turnout and the party would not have been a success without you. We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events.

2008 Spring Event "An Evening with Haywood Harris and Gus Manning"

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

Two of the most notable sports authorities in UT history, Haywood Harris and Gus Manning, joined us at Tolla's Italian Bistro & Cafe in Winter Park, FL on Wednesday June 4, 2008. Haywood Harris is the Executive Assistant to the Athletic Director at UT and Gus Manning is a Special Assistant to the Athletic Director. These two gentlemen have hosted a local Tennessee sports radio show for more than 20 years. Together they co-authored the bestselling book Six Seasons Remembered. Their latest book is Once a Vol, Always a Vol. Their UT sports knowledge and stories are unsurpassed making this a thoroughly entertaining event!

This intimate event started with a social allowing old and new alumni/family/friends to catch up on the news. Haywood Harris and Gus Manning were accompanied by Debbie Ingram (UTAA President) and Angela Mills (UTAA program director).

The capacity crowd was thoroughly entertained by Haywood's and Gus's humourous stories about UT Football. After their presentation, they signed their books Six Seasons Remembered and Once A Vol, Always A Vol . Proceeds from these books go directly to the University of Tennessee's athletic program. Their latest book Game of My Life: Tennessee Vols: Memorable Stories of Tennessee Football will be released in August. Pre-orders are being taken at this time.
